Ruby is the red variety of corundum, an aluminum oxide mineral and one of the hardest gemstones on Earth, second to diamonds. Its red color comes from traces of chromium. Rubies form under extreme heat and pressure most often in metamorphic rocks such as basalt. The largest ruby deposits are found in Myanmar (Burma), Sri Lanka, Thailand, Cambodia, Madagascar, and Tanzania.
